U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs hold more than $94 billion in assets as of May 2026. They give retirement accounts, RIAs, and brokerage clients a way to hold Bitcoin price exposure inside the accounts they already use.
But exposure is not ownership. An ETF share is a claim on Bitcoin, not Bitcoin you control. It carries a management fee that compounds against your position every year, it cannot be withdrawn to a wallet or self-custodied, and it depends on issuers, brokers, and sub-custodians.
The problem is most challenging for holders with a large, low-cost-basis position. They bought in years ago, watched it appreciate, and now sit on a significant unrealized gain. Selling means a capital gains bill. Staying means continued fee drag and exposure without the benefits of ownership.
Across Swan’s client base, long-term holders tell us the same thing: they want real Bitcoin, but the tax cost of selling has kept them from making the move. RBX is built for that investor.
“Bitcoin ETFs have helped many investors take their first step,” said Cory Klippsten, Founder and CEO of Swan Bitcoin. “But exposure is not the same as ownership. Swan RBX gives investors a path to move from ETF exposure to real, on-chain Bitcoin, structured to support a tax-efficient outcome.”
Tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances. RBX is designed to support a tax-efficient outcome where applicable, so consult your tax advisor before proceeding.
RBX is a structured, in-kind exchange service. It converts a client’s spot Bitcoin ETF shares into real, on-chain Bitcoin delivered to a Swan account, without requiring the client to sell those shares on an exchange. The structure is designed to support in-kind exchange treatment, subject to individual tax circumstances.
This is not an ETF redemption, which is available only to authorized participants working directly with the fund sponsor. RBX is a purpose-built conversion process for individual holders, delivered in collaboration with Swan’s partner registered investment advisor, with Bitcoin trading and custody handled through Swan’s institutional partners. It aligns with best practices for asset exchanges and is guided by the Swan Private Wealth team.
RBX for investors with sizable, low-cost-basis positions in spot Bitcoin ETFs.
Typical RBX candidates include:
High-net-worth individuals holding large Bitcoin ETF positions with significant embedded gains
Family offices and trusts holding Bitcoin ETF positions across multiple entities
Long-term holders who plan to pass Bitcoin to the next generation and want it on their own terms
RBX is available to Swan Private clients. If RBX fits your position, a Swan Private representative can walk you through the specifics.
Real, on-chain Bitcoin in a Swan account opens up options an ETF share cannot. Hold it in Swan’s institutional-grade custody, move it into Swan Vault collaborative self-custody, or take full self-custody, plan around it, and borrow against it.
Swan Vault. Move Bitcoin into Swan Vault, a 2-of-3 collaborative wallet where you hold two keys and manage the third through your Swan account. ETF shares cannot be self-custodied. Real Bitcoin can: keys you control, on hardware you control, with Swan for support rather than a counterparty.
Swan Generations. Pass Bitcoin to the next generation with Swan Generations. ETF shares move through an estate as paper claims that keep charging fees to heirs. Real Bitcoin transfers cleanly and is held by the next generation on their own terms.
Swan IRA. Real Bitcoin can sit in a retirement account, too. Swan IRA holds Bitcoin directly, not an ETF wrapper, as a Traditional or Roth IRA. Investors holding a Bitcoin ETF inside a 401(k) or IRA face the same exposure-versus-ownership tradeoff in retirement that RBX addresses for taxable accounts.
Real Bitcoin ownership is the foundation of everything Swan does: accumulation, collaborative self-custody, retirement, inheritance, and borrowing against real Bitcoin without selling it. None of those work on top of an ETF share. They require the asset itself.
Bitcoin ETFs gave many investors an easy way to hold Bitcoin exposure inside familiar accounts. For those who plan to own Bitcoin for the long term, owning it directly comes down to when and on what terms. RBX is that path.
If you hold a sizable Bitcoin ETF position, a Swan Private representative can review whether the structure fits your position and walk you through the steps. Talk to a Swan Private representative at swan.com/rbx or email rbx@swan.com.
