Both Traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs have tax advantages:
- Traditional IRAs typically have pre-tax contributions that grow tax-deferred until disbursement.
- Roth IRAs typically have post-tax contributions that grow completely tax-free.
Swan IRA is a great way to capture Bitcoin’s long-term potential in a tax-advantaged way without the tracking error that many proxies have. On top of that, unlike when you trade Bitcoin outside a tax-advantaged account, doing so within an IRA allows you to avoid the often-tedious process of reporting trades on your taxes each year.
Swan IRA holds Bitcoin in a custodial legal trust account, in your name as the beneficial owner. Swan works with two qualified custodians, Fortress Trust and BitGo Trust Company.
Although Bitcoin in your Swan IRA can not be withdrawn into self-custody, it can be sold at any time and proceeds distributed under standard IRA disbursement rules. If self-custody is paramount to you, a US retirement LLC or trust (e.g., checkbook IRA, etc.) may be a solution. There are a few important considerations when thinking about IRAs and self-custody, such as the McNulty tax case from 2021.
Swan has supported many clients through this process. If you would like to learn more, one of our experts is happy to help you achieve your retirement goals and self-custody needs. Please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
